Audit Process
01 Automated Accessibility Testing
We begin with automated testing to identify issues that can be detected mechanically. Automated tools typically detect only around 30-40% of accessibility issues.
Tools used:
- WAVE - Web Accessibility Evaluation Tool
- axe DevTools
- Lighthouse
Key checks include:
- Missing alt text
- Colour contrast issues
- Heading structure
02 DOM Structure Audit
We review the page structure from the perspective of how assistive technologies, such as screen readers, interpret and announce the content — not just how it looks visually.
Tools used:
- Browser DevTools
- Accessibility Properties Inspector
Key checks include:
- Landmark structure
- Semantic HTML
- Form structure
- ARIA implementation
03 Manual UX Testing on Real Devices
Our focus is on manual verification—finding real-world usability issues that automated tools cannot detect.
Keyboard Focus Visibility
Key checks include:
- Keyboard focus is clearly visible
- Focus indicators are not hidden by sticky headers
- Default outlines are not removed
- Focus contrast is sufficient
Link & Button Clarity
We confirm whether users can understand the purpose of links and buttons from their accessible text alone.
For example: Can users understand what the link is about and where it leads without relying on surrounding visual context?
User Journey Testing
We test whether users can successfully complete these journeys.
User Journeys Examples:
- Contact form submission
- Account registration
- Product purchase
Test Methods:
- Visual interaction
- Keyboard-only interaction
- Screen reader interaction
04 Additional Accessibility Testing
Color Contrast Testing
We verify that on-site content meets the required 4.5:1 color contrast ratio under WCAG standards. Our review covers not only default display states, but also hover and focus interactions, as well as style changes triggered by scrolling or other dynamic behaviors.
Zoom, Responsive Layout & Reflow Testing
We compare layouts at standard and zoomed views to ensure all content remains usable.
Checks include:
- 200–400% zoom
- 320px viewport width
- Magnifier compatibility
Audio Alternatives
We verify the availability of Captions and Transcripts.
Cognitive Accessibility
We review overall readability and comprehension, including:
- Clear and simple language
- Consistent UI patterns
- Understandable error messages
05 WCAG Checklist & Reporting
Finally, we review each relevant WCAG success criterion to ensure no issues are overlooked and compile a detailed accessibility report.
You will receive a comprehensive report featuring practical solutions to help you meet compliance and improve quality. We invite you to review the sample of my work below.
Audit Report (Samples)
Momo Lab., a service site
We conducted a comprehensive accessibility audit of our previous site, based on WCAG 2.2 Level AA standards. Our approach goes beyond simply listing errors. Each report identifies specific user impacts, assigns clear priorities, and provides actionable remediation steps. We focus on the lived user experience (UX) through manual testing with actual assistive technologies—capturing the nuanced barriers that automated tools often overlook.
